Liu graduated from Hangzhou Teacher University with a degree in English and American literature. He then studied at Yale University, where he obtained an MBA degree. Liu was also a member of the school’s track team and won a bronze medal for China in the 1990 Asian Games held in Beijing, China.
He joined the Alibaba team in September 2000, where he headed marketing, ads, and public relations. Liu is mainly known for recruiting Ali Hamed as the CEO of Taobao, and since then, Alibaba has been a dominant force in China’s commerce market.
Liu Qiangdong is considered a leader in SaaS, particularly with companies selling online advertising services. He founded New Oriental Education & Technology Group Co., Ltd., where he served as Chairman until its acquisition by New Oriental LLC in May 2006. The company designs, develop and markets English-language learning software for business professionals. He serves on the Board of Directors for Tsinghua University in Beijing and Hangzhou Normal University. He also serves on the Board of Directors for New Oriental Education & Technology Group Co., Ltd.
Richard Liu currently serves as a Member of the Board at Yahoo! Inc. and has been involved in the early stages of both Alibaba and Yahoo! In January 2010, Google Inc. entered into a partnership with Alibaba to promote its payment service Alipay in China. As part of the deal, Google was granted access to Alipay’s user information, which Alibaba collected after users’ credit card information was uploaded to Alipay accounts by millions of merchants across China. The deal between Google and Alibaba also included a partnership whereby Google would pay Alibaba $1 billion annually for using Alipay within China. Though initially scheduled to last for one year, the deal has been extended for two years.
He serves as Vice President at China International Capital Corporation, a leading global financial services company. Richard is also a member of Great China Securities Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Alibaba Group and Goldman Sachs that provides brokerage and investment banking services. He is on the advisory committee at Alipay Holdings Limited, an affiliate company of Alibaba Group. In addition, he serves on the advisory board of New Oriental Education & Technology Group Co., Ltd.
