Richard Qiangdong Liu is the creator of JD.com, which used to be Jingdong and 360buy Ltd. Since its launch in 2004, he has remained chairman and head administrator.
Liu was born in Chang’an, a modest hamlet outside Suqian in the Jiangsu district of China. The community did not have modern comforts like running water and power. However, his parents were the offspring of once-wealthy Chinese businessmen who supplied products along the Yangtze River in the early 1900s. When he was born, however, their families had lost everything, and they were working as rice farmers.
Richard Liu enrolled in the sociology program at Renmin University and, on top of his studies and employment writing out copies of letters and documents for a small business, self-instructed himself in computing. His investment was exceedingly beneficial as he went into computer engineering shortly after that.
JD.com has become one of the largest online retailers in China and is now listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. It is also one of the most valuable companies in China, with a market capitalization of $41 billion as of 2019. Forbes Magazine has recognized Richard as one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in Asia and has been credited with transforming e-commerce in China. He is also a philanthropist and supports various charities, including the Red Cross Society of China.
In addition to his success with JD.com, Liu Qiangdong is also the founder and chairman of Yiguo E-commerce, a subsidiary of JD.com that specializes in selling fresh produce. In 2015, he was named one of China’s “Top Ten Economic Figures” by China Central Television for his dedication to promoting e-commerce in the country.
Liu has also been active in numerous other business ventures outside JD.com and Yiguo E-commerce. He is the founder and chairman of Beijing Shiji Information Technology Co., Ltd., which provides data services, software development, and IT solutions; Richard is the founder of Beijing Jiaji ayue Investment Management Co., Ltd., which focuses on venture capital investments.
