Kelcy Warren, the Chairman and CEO of Energy Transfer Partners, has been at the company’s helm since 2007. Born in 1955 in Texas, he is a true Texan with an entrepreneurial spirit and drives to succeed. His father, Hugh Brinson Warren, worked for Sun Oil, where Kelcy’s knowledge and interest in the oil and gas industry began. Even though his father only had a high school education, he instilled in Kelcy the importance of hard work and dedication to whatever task he undertook. His mother, Bertie Lee Kirby, was from Louisiana and encouraged her children to get the best education possible.
Kelcy Warren attended the University of North Texas and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduating, he joined Lone Star Gas Company as a design engineer. He left the company four years later to co-found Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. with Ray C. Davis and Michael A. Murchison. The company was created to become an industry leader and creator of value through its investments in the energy sector.
Energy Transfer quickly grew under Kelcy’s leadership to become one of the most diversified energy-traded partnerships in the United States. The company has become known for its many successful deals and investments, including the $5.3 billion purchase of Sunoco in 2012 and the merger with Williams Companies in a 33 billion deal.
In 2016, Kelcy Warren received Horatio Alger Award for his commitment to philanthropy and for exemplifying the American Dream. He generously supports educational initiatives, civil rights, and cancer research organizations. In addition, he serves on several boards of directors, including the University of North Texas System Board. Besides, Warren established the Qasim Foundation at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Arlington, to provide student scholarships.
