Shelton Haynes

Shelton Haynes is the President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). He was appointed to this position in 2018 and is currently responsible for the management and effective operations of the island. Haynes is an experienced professional with over 25 years of public service in the City of New York and has a strong background in public safety, economic development, and community engagement.

Shelton Haynes is an experienced executive with in-depth knowledge of public finance and economic development. As a former deputy mayor of New York City, he has political and government experience. In addition to his former expertise as a senior advisor to the mayor of New York City, Haynes will oversee all Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation operations, delivering essential services to the community’s residents, companies, and visitors. In addition, he will be responsible for developing and implementing long-term plans for the island’s economic development.

Roosevelt Island, situated in the East River between Manhattan and Queens, is run by the Roosevelt Island Operating Organization, a public benefit corporation. The island is home to unusual sights, such as the remnants of the Roosevelt Island Smallpox Hospital, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, and the Roosevelt Island Tramway.

Since taking office, Haynes has already made an impact on the island. He led the effort to create a memorial to honor the late Franklin D. Roosevelt, unveiled in October 2019. He has also been working to create a program to improve public safety on the island and ensure that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the attractions and amenities that Roosevelt Island has to offer.
